Tactile Pain Management
Friday, 01 October 2010 08:50
Over the past few years I have really wanted a way to be more analytical and technological with monitoring my patients outcome assessment. I have tried everything from standard forms and progress reports to mailing out weekly spreadsheets which patients fill in and return. All of these are time-consuming. Ironically enough, often patients lose motivation as well and do not always complete or return forms properly. Through this I began to develop an iPhone application that would allow for reminders and a tactile surface to measure their daily outcomes. I am happy to announce that I used my concept for the first time as a prototype today and am very excited about the potential of the application.
Strengthening The Core Will Not Always Work

CORE MUSCLES AREN'T ALWAYS GOING TO CREATE A HEALTHY SPINE
Often it is heard that in order to bullet proof our back we need to create a strong "core." However, as strong as this information is, it may not be relevant for all individuals. Clinically, an individual that has a weak core will no doubt be benefited from strengthening the core; however, often the individual will present with a strong core and still be troubled by disabling lower back pain. Body builders are a great example of this. I see many as patients and let me be the first to say, they don't have perfect spines.

Enhancing the Lower Back: Super Stiffness
Author: Dr. Stuart McGill Ph.D.
Stuart McGill, Professor of Spine Biomechanics
At a gymnastics or martial arts meet, or at a weightlifting competition, listen to the coaches advice to the athlete - Stay tight! This means to maintain stiffness. Being stiff ensures that there will be minimal energy losses as forces are transmitted through the linkages. Optimal performance requires stability, and stability results from stiffness. Stiffness in the body results from muscular co-contraction. Be stiff, and be compliant. Knowing the difference and when to be one or the other is a major way to improving performance.

"Does It Hurt?"
Authored by: Mike Boyle
This is another of my previously published pieces reprinted for your reading pleasure:
I get asked rehab questions all the time. I have rehabilitated athletes in almost every major sport who were told they were "all done" by a doctor or a team trainer. Because people know my background, they often ask for advice. Most of the time they ignore the advice because the advice does not contain the answer they want. They say "it only hurts when I run", I say things like "don't run". A famous coach I know once told me "people don't call for advice, they call for agreement or consensus. If you don't tell them what they want to hear, they simply call someone else". His advice to me, don't bother wasting your time with advice. Here I go again wasting time.
